The beach at Mount Maunganui in front of Cutters Cove. |
A couple of weeks ago I had a wedding to attend at New Zealand’s mini-version of Australia’s Gold Coast – Mount Maunganui – and as is traditionally the case with me, I thought, “Let’s stay somewhere awesome!”
The Mount (as it’s known by Kiwis) is two and half hours drive from Auckland and enjoys a sunny climate with a beautiful coastal scene. The surfing is good, the sand golden and the general outlook pretty positive. There are a smattering of quality high-ish rise apartment towers, but the lure of a lagoon-style pool, a mini-golf course and a tennis court took me to a three-storey ocean-front locale called Cutters Cove.
Funnily enough, wedding activities meant I didn’t have time for a swim in the tropical-looking, palm tree-lined pool, nor rounds of mini-golf or tennis. But just knowing they were there made me feel good about myself. Besides, the crashing-wave view from my balcony was pastime enough.
Particularly recommended for a couple of couples seeking a weekend away, I had a large two bedroom, two bathroom apartment in about as good a location as the Mount can offer. Cutters Cove also offers one bedroom as well as three or four bedroom apartments. Here are 15 photos, including four from the wedding venue at Bella Vista Lodge where friends JJ and Sarah were married.
