My Herald On Sunday Kauri Cliffs Feature – One Of The Premier Golf Resorts In The World

The Herald On Sunday published my two-page spread on Kauri Cliffs today and if you click here you can link to the Herald’s Travel section to read it. Kauri Cliffs is a 5-star, luxury resort in New Zealand’s Bay of Islands with a golf course so stunning it has been ranked by readers of Golf Digest as one of the top 40 courses in the world.

But being I’m not much of a golfer I decided to focus on all the things beyond golf you can do at the property. There’s tennis, a full spa, remote beaches, a waterfall, a 700-year old kauri, extensive bush walks, a driving range if you don’t want a full round and golf buggies to quickly zip around the magnificent property.

Here’s an excerpt:

Waiting for me on the steps of the Lodge was the guest relations officer, a chap in his early 70s named John, who welcomed me with a smile and handshake before insisting on unloading my bags from the car. The car was valet parked, my bags transported to my cottage and John took me inside to a chandeliered, artwork adorned, double fire-placed living room.

Welcome drink in hand, I tried to soak it in: the somehow homely opulence of the 15-year-old mansion, with its echoes of the decades-old exclusive properties in North Carolina where billionaire owner Julian Robertson hails from, the distant vision of the famed Hole in the Rock through the windows.
A curious feeling of being a conman came over me. Was I really worthy of staying here?
