I’m well aware this song has been out for some time, so as a proviso, I’m stating that fact first so as to prove I’m not behind the eight-ball. Merely, I’ve just been biding my time. That said, who really cares. This song is the best thing Beyonce has ever released, even if it hasn’t reached higher than 13 in the UK and 20 in the US. Any modern R&B that can simultaneously reference 80s stars New Edition and absolute Motown legends the Temptations is always going to be a winner, but what really sets this song apart is the singer’s range and lung power. With no less than four key changes in the last two minutes, Love On Top is both a catchy piece of retro R&B and a wonderfully ego-driven demonstration of Beyonce’s vocal prowess.
To all those who plaster YouTube with tired comments of, “Music today sucks,” have a listen to this and realise that yes, your favourite R&B bands may have existed before the birth of your kids, but if you dig deep enough, even with a mainstream artist like Beyonce, you can find some music that will stand the test of time.
Thank you! I've been trying to explain why this sounds like 80s gold, but nobody believes me. Definitely one of Beyonce's best.
