Has anyone ever written blogs about Captain & Tennille and Eminem on the same day? It’s the question on everybody’s lips this summer. Suffering a whiff of FOMO* right now with 50,000 of my fellow Aucklanders at the Eminem Western Springs gig, I couldn’t resist making a semi-controversial list.
Here are my top 20 hip-hop songs ever. And if they’re too mainstream / aren’t hardcore enough etc I don’t care! These are my favourites of a genre that at its best is exhilarating, though all too often vulgar for no real reason. In no order other than that which they came to me, here’s my top 20:
The Message – Grand Master Flash & The Furious Five
Lose Yourself – Eminem
Stan – Eminem
Homecoming – Kanye West feat. Chris Martin
Ghetto Gospel** – 2Pac feat. Elton John
California Love – 2Pac
Mo Money Mo Problems – Notorious B.I.G feat. Puffy Daddy & Mase
Airplanes – B.O.B feat. Haley Williams
Everything Is Everything – Lauryn Hill
Regulate – Warren G & Nate Dogg
Shake Ya’ Tailfeather – Nelly, P. Diddy, Murphy Lee
Country Grammar – Nelly
Sing For The Moment – Eminem
Juicy – Notorious B.I.G
No Diggity – Blackstreet
Can’t Hold Us – Macklemore & Ryan Lewis feat. Ray Dalton
Hate It Or Love It – 50 Cent, The Game
Empire State Of Mind – Alicia Keys feat. Jay-Z
Chains – DLT feat. Che Fu
Jesus Is A Friend Of Mine – Aaron Neville
And if there has to be a #1, the fact I know every line to Regulate and have regularly used this under-appreciated skill as a party trick must be a sign:
*FOMO = fear of missing out. I already feel embarrassed to have used this expression.
