Captain & Tennille Divorce After Nearly 40 Years Of Marriage – The Forgotten Art Of Cuss-Free Pop Music

Captain & Tennille.

I’m mildly gutted to hear Captain & Tennille are divorcing. After 39 years of marriage! I only found this out when I saw that this Valentine’s Day was 40 years since they married. Unsure whether they were still a couple, a quick Google search revealed they’d gotten a divorce just last month.

There are suggestions the stresses of The Captain’s (Daryl Dragon) Parkinson’s-like neurological condition may’ve contributed to the end of one of the one of the longest marriages in showbiz, though who really knows what goes on behind closed doors. Reports also have the duo still living together, despite the split.

There seems something extra sad about the end of such long marriages. Regardless, it’s a reminder of the music Captain & Tennille created, including their final major hit, the 1980 US #1 Do That To Me One More Time. Unlike the newly-crass Beyonce, this is a first class piece of sensual R&B, set to a melody I always found sorrowful.

With f-bombs now existing even in R&B ballads (what were Mariah Carey and Miguel thinking with the completely unnecessary swearing in what was otherwise a Motown-esque love song Beautiful?), it’s nice to be reminded of cuss-free pop music.

And more than that, cuss-free pop music that is in reality still sensual. Only unlike much of the music on Beyonce’s latest album – an artist seemingly beyond reproach – Do That To Me One More Time is simultaneously carnal as well as classy.

Here it is, Captain & Tennille’s Do That To Me One More Time:
