Music With A Message – My Newstalk ZB Interview On Why Pop Matters

A few weeks back I was interviewed on another Newstalk ZB show, Total Recall, about pop songs that have a message and a conscience. As someone who loves popular music and the possibilities of the format (including when it’s being highly socially charged) this is one of my favourite topics.

In the clip below (approximately nine minutes long) hear me discuss with hosts Sam and Jax the evolution of songs with a social conscience, from hymns like Amazing Grace to soul classics like Sam Cooke’s A Change Is Gonna’ Come to rockers like Bruce Springsteen’s Born In The USA.

Other artists analysed include the Commodores, the Four Tops, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. Thanks for listening! You can tune into Total Recall on Newstalk ZB every Sunday from 6pm-7:30pm with my own show, The Two, on shortly after from 8pm-11pm.
